Dr. Gottesman is Stroke Branch Chief and Senior Investigator of the Stroke, Cognition, And Neuroepidemiology (SCAN) section at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Intramural research program at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Gottesman completed her undergraduate and medical training at Columbia University, and her internship and neurology residency and Vascular neurology fellowship at Johns Hopkins, and a PhD in Clinical Investigation at the Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Gottesman was Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Epidemiology, as well as a Core Faculty member in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research at Johns Hopkins prior to her move to NINDS in 2021. She maintains an adjunct faculty appointment at Hopkins. 

Dr. Gottesman’s research focuses on the vascular contributions to cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as on cerebral small vessel disease and post-stroke dementia, and disparities in these conditions. She primarily studies large epidemiologic cohorts, with leadership roles in the ARIC study and the new DISCOVERY cohort. She is a former Associate Editor for the journal Neurology, is co-Section Editor for the Epidemiology, Outcomes and Population Science section of the journal Stroke, won the 2019 Outstanding Stroke Research Mentor award from the American Heart Association, and is an elected member of ASCI. She was previously Director and Secretary for the American Neurological Association and is currently Chair of the ANA Annual Program Committee.
