Irene Cortese obtained her MD and neurology specialty training in Rome, Italy. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Neuroimmunology Branch at NIH, and then a US neurology residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital; she returned to NIH as a Clinical Neuroimmunology fellow. She was Director of the NINDS Neuroimmunology Clinic from 2013-2021, and is now Chief of the NINDS Experimental Immunotherapeutics Unit, focused on translational research in PML.
