A. Gordon Smith MD is the Kenneth and Diane Wright Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University. His area of clinical expertise is neuromuscular medicine, particularly peripheral neuropathies and disorders of neuromuscular junction transmission. His NIH funded research team focuses on peripheral neuropathy associated with chemotherapy exposure, diabetes and obesity. He has a particular interest in biomarker development and clinical trial design. He holds numerous leadership roles in national and international professional organizations including the Association of University Professors of Neurology, the American Academy of Neurology, the Peripheral Nerve Society and the American Brain Foundation.
