Academic neurologists at the mid to late career level may seek to become a department chair for a variety of reasons, often related to the focus of their careers in research, education or clinical care. In this interactive session moderated by L. John Greenfield, Jr, President of the AUPN, four department chairs (Tracey A. Milligan, MD, Claire Henchcliffe, MD, A. Gordon Smith, MD, and Jun Li, MD, PhD) will discuss how their prior careers prepared them (or didn't) for their responsibilities as department chairs.

The focus of this AUPN session is “Pathways to becoming a chair” and so we recruited Chairs relatively new to the job, who may recall what motivated them to look for this level of responsibility, what challenges they faced, how they have managed being a chair along with other facets of their academic career.
