This course will discuss the advantages and challenges of using Advanced Practice Providers (APP’s) in Outpatient and Inpatient Neurological settings. Given the shortage of neurologists and neurological residents, departments must look to alternative methods to care for the tsunami of patients we care for in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Learning Objectives:
1. How App’s are currently utilized in Neurological Practices
2. Training and Background for Neurological APP’s
3. Settings and practices in which APP’s thrive
Advanced Practice Providers and How They Fit into Neurology
Speaker: Aashit Shah, MD, FANA
With increasing and glaring deficiency of Neurologists across USA (especially outside of large metro areas), ACP are increasingly being used to fill the gap in care. It is likely that trend is going to accelerate. As neurology leaders we should think about the best ways to create qualified ACPs for the job. The presentaitons will discuss the landscape of neurology practice in Urabn/rural part of the country and involving ACPs in vqrious setting of inpatient and outpatient genral neurology practices as well as in specialized programs. Training of ACPs, Neurology fellowship for ACPs and Financial viability of ACP model of care will be highlighted.
Financial Considerations for APPs in Academic Neurology Practice
Speaker: Dane Chetkovich, MD, FANA
This presentation will consider advanced practice provider (APP) inpatient and outpatient workload, billing vs. non-billing work models, optimal outpatient templates, and compensation models.
The key role of APP's in opening and expanding services
Speaker: Salvador Cruz-Flores, MD, MPH, FANA
Opening new services or expanding services requires a critical mass of people able to provide such service in a continuous fashion. This is particularly true for new and small neurology departments. Residents have a work hour limitation and small training programs may not have enough residents to be able to offer hospital services 24/7. In the clinic the presence of APP's can facilitate the expansion of new specialties by taking on delivering general neurology care while faculty can focus in their area of expertise. I will be discussing our experience of the critical role that APP's have had in the growth, expansion, and provision of services of our young, and small department of neurology.
Managing APPs within an academic neurology department
Speaker: Gwenn Garden, MD, PhD, FANA
Discussion of experience in an academic department with a large group of inpatient and outpatient focused APPs.
